Global NeuroCare® is a 501(c)(3) charity that seeks to improve neurological care in developing regions of the world. In Special Consultative Status with the United Nations ECOSOC, the organization works alongside educational and health institutions as well as local groups to train doctors, improve patient care and advance medical research.
Global NeuroCare® focuses on Ethiopia, the most stable country in the Horn of Africa, bordered by Somalia, Eritrea, Djibouti, Kenya and the Sudans. This region has a population of over 100 million people; over 90 million in Ethiopia, with an estimated five million in the capital city of Addis Ababa.
More than a third of Ethiopia’s population lives below the poverty line, which means they make less than 60 cents per day. As a result of these dire economic conditions and other related factors, food and water security are poor, basic health care is limited and infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria are common. In addition, Ethiopia faces the added burden of noninfectious diseases including an increasing incidence of neurological disorders such as stroke, epilepsy, neuropathy, spine disease, dementia and headache. Global NeuroCare® is dedicated to improving neurological care with the vision of global neurological equity.
